Health At Every Size (HAES) is a set of principles gaining traction in the health and medical space. Due to the differing approach to health from the traditional, weight-centered model, it is only natural that members of the medical community and of the general public would be uncertain and wary of this holistic lens from which we can view health.
HAES is not “anti-weight loss”. HAES supports the concept of weight inclusivity. We acknowledge that it is normal and expected for bodies to come in all shapes and sizes. It means that we will not use one’s weight status as the primary indicator of health or of disease.
HAES is not “pro-obesity”. HAES supports respectful care to people in all body types. We acknowledge biases and work to end weight discrimination/ stigma, providing healthy weight loss services and recommendations equally to all patients, regardless of body size. We avoid making assumptions about one’s health, personality, character, diet, or fitness level based on their weight or appearance.
HAES is not encouraging people to eat only “junk food”. HAES supports eating for well-being. We promote making individualized, flexible weight loss programs and dietary choices based on nutritional needs, as well as hunger, satiety, pleasure, and social connection. As opposed to making dietary choices based primarily on weight control.
HAES is not encouraging people to abstain from exercise. HAES supports life-enhancing movement. We encourage people to engage in movement that supports physical and mental health. We support physical activities that allow people of all sizes, abilities, and interests to enjoy moving their body.
The HAES model supports the whole person. HAES promotes health equity, supports ending size-discrimination, and improves access to appropriate healthcare treatment, recommendations, and healthy weight loss referrals regardless of body size.
