Benefit of a 'Dietitian' over a 'Nutritionist'

Registered Dietitians (RDs) are regulated health professionals. The title ‘dietitian’ is protected by law, just like physician, nurse and pharmacist. However, ‘nutritionist’ is not a protected title – that means anyone can use it. RDs are considered to be the leading experts in the field of food and nutrition. All dietitians are required to have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in dietetics, nutrition or related field. However, most dietitians hold some type of advanced graduate degree or specialized certification(s) such as sports, pediatric, renal, oncology or gerontological nutrition. In addition, dietitians must complete 1,200 hours of a dietetic internship, successfully pass the national board of examination and maintain 75 hours of continuing education every 5 years.
